The Disability Action/Comedy “Special Needs Revolt!” to Screen at the Little Theatre
Rochester, NY, September 3, 2026 — The Rochester-produced film SPECIAL NEEDS REVOLT! will screen at the Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue, on Thursday, October 1st at 7:30 pm. This action-comedy featuring actors and characters with disabilities, depicts a ragtag group of rebels fighting back against a tyrannical regime in a dystopian America.
The film addresses issues that are very much on the minds of many developmentally disabled adults: the desire to be portrayed as functional adults, with the full range of adult emotions and desires. Special Needs Revolt! is an incisive, funny political comedy, full of over-the-top visceral action.
Special Needs Revolt! was shot in the Buffalo and Rochester areas, featuring many local actors and crew people. The scriptwriting began during President Trump’s first term, when director Adrian Esposito and co-writers Curt Markham and Bill Weeden felt compelled to tell a story of resistance against tyranny.
With this film, Esposito continues his trend of depicting underdogs, the abused, and victims of discrimination. His past films are about survivors of WWII, native peoples and their spiritual beliefs, characters with disabilities, even independent filmmakers who buck the system. His last feature film, CLOWNS IN THE WOODS, was a horror film with an autistic lead character.
Esposito seeks out ways to cast people with disabilities. “I want to cast people in films they wouldn’t otherwise be in,” he says. Special Needs Revolt! is a raunchy comedy, not the usual PG-fare you might expect to see disability actors in.
The film tells the story of Billy Bates, a young man with Down syndrome, who wakes from a three-year coma to discover that the United States has been turned into a brutal dictatorship thanks to President Kruger. This narcissistic despot with bad hair has put all people with disabilities into institutions. Billy becomes the leader of a diverse group of resistance fighters, a modern day Rambo, committed to ending Kruger’s reign of terror.
Although a fictional account, this film raises many questions regarding present day political issues. The special needs individuals respond to President Kruger’s evil methods. Don’t miss this exciting and informative movie!
